I was recently asked why I still wear a pin on my shoulder that says “British Army – Be The Best.”

The truth is, those three words — Be The Best — were one of the main reasons I joined the British Army in the first place. When I became a Royal Fusilier, I discovered the huge range of opportunities available within the Army, from trade skills to leadership training. Looking back now, I realise just how valuable those hands-on skills have become, especially as the world moves deeper into the age of AI. Many of those practical jobs are proving to be the backbone of our economy — true blue-collar essentials.

Even today, I still live by the principles I learned in basic training. I start each morning with 500ml of water before breakfast, then head for a workout or walk (I’ve stopped running these days 😅). That daily discipline reminds me that being my best means taking care of myself so I can give my best to others.

Throughout my Army career — from Fusilier to Movement Control, and later as an Army Linguist — my focus was always on the value I could bring. I used to work at the Port and Airport in Mauritius as an Officer, Mover was a perfect fit, the Army wanted to strengthen its relationship with the French Navy– my French became handly. And that mindset stayed with me when I transitioned into civilian life.

Now, as a UK Veteran from the Commonwealth, I often reflect on how much stability and strength the British Army ethos still brings me. In today’s fast-changing, uncertain world, I find comfort in those standards — they shape how I think, act, and contribute.

The pin I wear that says “Be The Best” now carries a deeper meaning. For me, it also stands for “Help the Rest.” That’s what I do today — helping veterans navigate career transitions through Leavers to Leaders.
Because truthfully, transitioning from military service as a Commonwealth veteran isn’t the same as it is for someone born in the UK, no matter what official organisations say. That’s why I also built our social and welfare Arms Op Belonging — to bridge that gap.

After working with many veterans from all walks of lives in the UK, France and India, I’ve realised one thing that’s universal: identity plays a massive role in our lives after service. Every veteran struggle with it until they rediscover their purpose and gain clarity about who they are. My biggest advice after 20 years as a veteran? Take the time to re-evaluate your Why. Knowing that changes everything.
